The areas along the coasts have always been battered by storms, cyclones and tidal waves but with fragile marine eco system being the first one to witness the impacts of climate change, things are getting worst. The sea is rougher, the cyclone and storms harsher and more frequent. This has compounded problems like beach erosion, contamination of fresh water by sea water etc. These characteristics bring the coastal areas under pressure to plan and develop mechanisms to mitigate the possible disasters and strengthen the ecological security and resilience of the local communities residing along the coast.
Nature has provided its own mechanisms to limit the impact of such events. Naturally occurring geographic features like coral reefs and mangroves acted as a defense shield against the raging sea. Unfortunately, over the years these natural defenses have been destroyed for short term gains, leaving the coastal areas at the mercy of the violent sea.
SEEDS has set up a multi-layered and multi species bio-shield in the Light House Panchayat area in Thiruvallur District of Tamil Nadu as a mechanism to counter effects of the possible coastal disasters. It is designed to strengthen ecological security of the coastal ecosystems as well as livelihood security of coastal communities.
A contribution of just Rs. 500 will not only help us plant a sapling but will also make sure that it is well taken care of and grows into a big strong tree and save lives and livelihoods of people along the coast
