Children are the most valuable resource for our future but still thousands of them lose their lives in disasters every year. Why? Simply because their schools were not built properly. 90% of the buildings in India are non engineered buildings, which means that proper planning was not done before constructing them. SEEDS work in high disaster risk areas to convert these unsafe school buildings into more durable and safer structures which are be able to withstand the stress and strain better.
Shimla and surrounding areas fall in the top 2 zones of the seismic map of India which means that they have a high risk of earthquake striking. Another large risk the area faces is that of landslides during monsoons. Phenomenon like cloudbursts and flash floods are also witnessed in the area.
Currently SEEDS is working with the Government Senior School in Tutu area of Shimla. This school falls under the highest earthquake risk zone of the country and also faces periodic landslides. The school has almost 500 students and with support staff and teachers there are around 600 people in the school at any given time. The approach to the school is through a narrow winding kuchha path with no proper lights or signage increasing the chances of a stampede in times of emergency. SEEDS is currently in the process of formulating a school disaster management plan and training the students and school staff in disaster preparedness but some structural changes are required to really have a meaningful and effective intervention. And it is for this we seek your help.
Rs.100,000 will not only make sure of the safety of the school building but will also provide students access to clean and proper sanitation. |
