Erratic
rainfall characterizes Afghanistan’s biophysical environment.
According to an analysis of climate and drought records by the Asian
Development Bank , localized droughts in parts of the country have
a return period of three to five years, while drought covering large
areas of zones recurs every 9 – 11 years. Drought with national
scope has a return period of about 20 – 30 years. The recent
drought, however, is unusual and perhaps the worst in country’s
history.
Water table continues to drop in all urban areas
in the country because the aquifers have not been sufficiently recharged.
Urban residents across the country rely largely on shallow hand
dug wells which are increasingly going dry. The problem is worse
in rural areas , where distances to safe drinking water are long
.While serious in all around the country , the problem varies in
intensity in different districts.
The table shows, how afghnistan
had been affected by drought in the past..
