Project Selamat |
The Indian Ocean Tsunami, 2004 that took lives of more than 250000 people across 13 countries, highlighted the need to relook into development approaches and initiate a collaborative effort to mainstream disaster preparedness and risk reduction.
SEEDS along with its Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network (ADRRN) partners collaborated with governments, academic institutes and community based organizations to build and sensitize communities to be better prepared for natural disasters and prevent loss of lives. |

The collaborative efforts known as Project Selamat (Literally means “ being safe”) is being implemented across four countries namely : India, Indonesia, Maldives and Sri Lanka. The activities primarily focused on coastal communities: making them aware of their risks, building knowledge resource and internalize preparedness through training and education. |
Universities across Asia worked with the members of ADRRN to develop training modules on disaster management. This also resulted in more practical curriculums on disaster management across universities. Across countries, the project focused on several key issues like preparedness of hospitals, safety of children in schools, coastal bio-shields, community education and training, policy advocacy, early warning and climate change related threats.
Supported by European Union and United Nations /Internal Strategy for Disaster Reduction , Project Selamat is presently working on a comprehensive DRR resource kit that can be used by common people to be better prepared for natural disasters. |
