COMMUNITY BASED DISASTER MANAGEMENT

Disaster management needs to be decentralized to the level of the individuals. The individual at risk should be empowered to be able to make informed choices for herself and her family's safety.

SEEDS is currently promoting such activities in India and other Asian countries. Activities include educating people on local hazards, risk mapping and environmental assessments, training on sustainable practices, disaster management plans and strengthening government-community linkages.

SCHOOL SAFETY

Tens of thousands of children have perished because their schools did not protect them: they died in earthquakes, floods, cyclones, landslides and wildfires. They died because their schools were not built properly, or on the right kind of land, or high enough above the flood plain, or no one knew how to protect them. No task is as important as creating a safe learning environment for children.

SEEDS, in partnership with the government are currently involved with more than 1000 schools across India. SEEDS school safety initiative involves structural safety of school buildings, training and educating children on life saving skills and school disaster management planning.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change impacts are a clear and present threat to global environment and our very own existence. SEEDS is committed to empower local communities for adaptive actions to restore security to life and basic necessities. The starting point of our intervention is education for sustainable development and amplify the voices of the people most affected to government and key national stakeholders.

SAFE CONTRUCTION PRACTICES

A vast gap exists between knowledge and practice. Local masons and construction workers lack the skills and know-how to build safe houses and public buildings. People living in disaster prone regions also continue to stay in unsafe houses.

SEEDS with its team of engineers provides hands on training to masons for retrofitting and safe construction practices. It is also involved in sensitizing citizens on building safety and action based research on traditional construction technologies.

OPEN LEARNING

Frontline workers like school teachers, NGO workers, local government staff and volunteers are the first to act during disasters but last to get trained. An education system that recognizes local knowledge, provides access to frontline workers and connects them to sound academic knowledge is a strongly felt need.

SEEDS, in collaboration with eminent institutions from around the world has initiated an open learning model with a distance learning option to create link between knowledge centers and frontline workers.

INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION

Experiences in community level disaster management need to be shared among nations, especially in south and south east Asia. These provide fresh inputs and learning for local organizations working with communities.

SEEDS as a steering committee member of the Asian Disaster Reduction and Response Network (www.adrrn.net ) remain committed towards increased collaboration among NGOs and other stakeholders for effective and efficient disaster reduction and response in the Asia-Pacific region. It is also the founding member National Alliance on Disaster Risk Reduction ( www.nadrrindia.net) a similar body at national level.
