Early monsoons. Widespread floods. Families on the edge.

As the monsoons arrived ahead of schedule this year, large parts of India are already reeling under the impact of intense and continuous rainfall. States like Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Odisha have seen flash floods, landslides, and urban waterlogging that have left thousands of families stranded. Agricultural lands have been submerged, roads washed away, and basic services like water and electricity have been disrupted.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued severe rainfall warnings across several states, with Red Alerts for extremely heavy rainfall in key regions. The warnings follow days of intense monsoon activity across western and southern India, affecting travel and daily life in many districts (The Economic Times). With over 19 states on high rainfall alert, the crisis is escalating fast, turning homes into islands, cutting off villages, and forcing people to take shelter wherever they can.

And once again, it is the low economic households who are hit the hardest, with little to fall back on and nowhere to go.

Why Your Support Matters Right Now

This isn't just a weather event. Shifting monsoon patterns and dam-induced flooding are making the situation worse each year. But we can act before disaster strikes at its worst.

SEEDS is not only responding but preparing:

  • Immediate Relief: Emergency supplies already delivered in Cachar and Jorhat districts, Assam.
  • Anticipatory Action: Proactive work in Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Golaghat, and Majuli districts to prepare 10,000 families in each district with evacuation plans, early warning triggers, and community mobilisation.

Your contribution ensures both relief and resilience, helping families survive today and prepare for tomorrow.

Where We Are Responding

Assam

Assam has emerged as one of the worst-affected regions, particularly the Cachar district. Sudden dam water releases, overflowing rivers, and poor drainage have left entire villages submerged. Many families are taking shelter by the roadside, with no official camps or support in sight. Access to clean water, food, and basic hygiene remains a serious challenge.

The situation has worsened in the Jhanjimukh area of Central Jorhat, where a breach in the Jhanji River embankment has led to severe flooding across multiple villages including Boralimora Mishing Gaon, Ejarguri, Bonaipothar, Gelekoni Gaon, Sonariati, and Arunamukh. Homes have been submerged, food stocks destroyed, and families displaced with minimal access to clean water, food, or sanitation.

SEEDS is on the ground.

SEEDS has scaled up relief efforts in Cachar and Jorhat districts. We have currently responded in Cachar with emergency relief for affected families, starting with family kits, and transitional shelters kits to 800+ families in Udharbond village. In Jhanjimukh area of Jorhat, a breach in the Jhanji River embankment has caused widespread flooding across several villages, displacing families and destroying essential supplies. We have initiated immediate response work to support 200 affected families, providing dry ration, hygiene kits, and essential non-food items.

Building Flood Resilience: Anticipatory Action in Assam

Beyond emergency relief, SEEDS is actively working on anticipatory action across Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Golaghat, and Majuli districts. Anticipatory action means preparing communities before disaster strikes, ensuring that people, livestock, and essential belongings can be moved to safety when warnings are issued.

Our approach includes:

• Community orientation sessions: Training local volunteers and community groups on evacuation protocols, first aid, and emergency planning.

• Risk mapping and village identification: Pinpointing the most vulnerable areas within each district based on local triggers such as river levels and rainfall data.

• Emergency response kits pre-positioning: Stockpiling relief materials in strategic locations for quick distribution.

• Database creation: Mapping and registering over 10,000 families per district to ensure no one is left behind during evacuation and relief.

• Local trigger systems: Working with local authorities and meteorological inputs to develop effective early warning mechanisms specific to each area.

By strengthening preparedness on the ground, SEEDS aims to reduce the loss of life, property, and livelihoods before the floodwaters arrive.
