Most of the households depend on water supply system for their drinking purpose that runs through electricity. Due to #CycloneAmphan, power supply has been breached and safe drinking water has become a major issue for the families living in Sarada grampanchayat, Contai 1 Block in EastMedinipur.
With the support of SEEDS, Kajla Jankalyan Samiti (KJKS), a local NGO has been able able to facilitate 15 villages, around 7000 families with #safedrinkingwater. They have hired a generator that runs 30 minutes in the morning and evening, providing drinking water to the #cyclone affected families.
Thirty-two-year-old Sheikh Zaid no longer has to ride his bicycle for 4-5 kms and stand in long queue for water. He engages in daily wage labour work. For Gopal Mitra from a nearby village Hinchi, it was extremely difficult to support a large family of 17 members without water. He works in an offset press in Cuttack and returned home six months ago. He could not go back for work due to #COVID19 crisis. For the first 2 initial days post cyclone, he fetched water from KJKS. Chandan Pradhan, 48, has traveled 5 kms to fetch water in Gamramada, Sarada village with his 2 sons. He also carries water for his neighbours.
