Early monsoons. Widespread floods. Families on the edge.

As the monsoons arrived ahead of schedule this year, large parts of India are already reeling under the impact of intense and continuous rainfall. States like Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Odisha have seen flash floods, landslides, and urban waterlogging that have left thousands of families stranded. Agricultural lands have been submerged, roads washed away, and basic services like water and electricity have been disrupted.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued severe rainfall warnings across several states, with Red Alerts for extremely heavy rainfall in key regions. The warnings follow days of intense monsoon activity across western and southern India, affecting travel and daily life in many districts (The Economic Times). With over 19 states on high rainfall alert, the crisis is escalating fast, turning homes into islands, cutting off villages, and forcing people to take shelter wherever they can.

This isn't just a weather event. Scientists and field agencies alike are pointing to shifting monsoon patterns, climate change, and unplanned urban development as key contributors. In many areas, the damage has been made worse by dam-induced flooding, poor drainage systems, and encroachments on natural water channels.

And once again, it is the low economic households who are hit the hardest, with little to fall back on and nowhere to go.

Assam

Assam has emerged as one of the worst-affected regions, particularly the Cachar district. Sudden dam water releases, overflowing rivers, and poor drainage have left entire villages submerged. Many families are taking shelter by the roadside, with no official camps or support in sight. Access to clean water, food, and basic hygiene remains a serious challenge.

SEEDS is on the ground.

SEEDS is on the ground. We are currently responding in Cachar with emergency relief for affected families, starting with family kits, and transitional shelters kits to 800 families in Udharbond village. We are now scaling up our response to support 200 families in Jorhat, while initiating anticipatory action in high-risk districts.

Now, the situation has worsened in the Jhanjimukh area of Central Jorhat, where a breach in the Jhanji River embankment has led to severe flooding across multiple villages including Boralimora Mishing Gaon, Ejarguri, Bonaipothar, Gelekoni Gaon, Sonariati, and Arunamukh. Homes have been submerged, food stocks destroyed, and families displaced with minimal access to clean water, food, or sanitation.

We are initiating emergency relief for 200 affected families in Jorhat, focusing on ration kits, WASH supplies, non-food items, and temporary shelter support. In parallel, anticipatory action is being planned in additional high-risk districts as the monsoon advances. SEEDS remains committed to reaching the most vulnerable communities swiftly and with dignity.
